Sustainable Skin Care: How We Reduce Our Carbon Footprint

Sustainability in skin care means reducing environmental impact at every stage - from packaging and shipping to manufacturing and energy use. 

April is Earth Month, April 22nd is Earth Day. However, respecting our planet and minimizing our carbon footprint is something we think about year-round. 

Our mission is to create antioxidant and anti-inflammatory skin care products that will help your skin look and feel its best, no matter your age. As we take care of your skin, we also strive to take care of our planet. We are always looking for ways to minimize our carbon footprint and improve our environmental and sustainability practices. 

Here’s how we work to minimize our carbon footprint.

Sustainable Packaging Choices

First and foremost, our concentrated formulas are designed to last longer, reducing the need for frequent repurchasing and excess packaging.

Inner packaging: We have mostly transitioned from plastic to sugarcane plastic, which is a bioplastic obtained from renewable sources, specifically sugar cane ethanol instead of petroleum. We also watch how much glass we use… it is more environmentally friendly than plastic, but so much heavier, which means the carbon footprint of shipping glass jars is much higher than we would like. 

Outer packaging: We use FSC-certified paper and soy ink for our boxes. The Forest Stewardship Council certifies that the paper has been responsibly harvested. When possible, we are also removing boxes altogether for some of our products, and rightsizing the boxes we do need to keep to protect the integrity of certain products. 

Eco-Friendly Shipping & Materials

Packaging for shipping. We monitor the size of our boxes to ensure we are not “overpackaging” shipments, and use recycled paper padded envelopes whenever possible. We also use paper to pack boxes and minimize bubble wrap. We never use peanuts.  

We have transitioning to 100% paper and recyclable padded mailers for our smaller shipments. This means less inner packaging and lighter weights to ship (which require less energy for transportation). This is not a perfect solution - on very rare occasions, your products arrive a little bit dinged up, which is a compromise we are willing to make. 

On those rare occasions someone wishes to return a product, we almost never ask for it to be shipped back to us. We would just throw it away anyway and returning it would require additional packaging and energy use for transportation. So instead, we suggest you gift that product that didn’t work for your skin to a friend or family member. 

Energy-Efficient Warehouse Systems

Our warehouse has a rooftop solar array that generates 70% of the power. We use LED and motion-activated lighting throughout, and perform regular energy audits. Our warehouse is GOTS certified and while this certification applies to textiles and not cosmetics, the practices apply to all.

Finally, vegan and cruelty-free, because we take care of your skin, take care of our planet, and also believe in taking care of animals. We are certified by PETA and Leaping Bunny.
