Green tea, from the plant Camellia sinensis, is typically used in skin care because of its high concentration of polyphenols (also known as catechins). The most studied of these polyphenols is epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which is known to help prevent and repair free radical damage. Green tea also contains quercetin, an antioxidant that helps to neutralize excess iron in the skin, as well as resveratrol, another super-antioxidant. Finally, green tea also contains caffeine and tannins, which help to decrease puffiness.
