As a CEO, one of my key responsibilities is to give my team, my shareholders, my customers, faith, encouragement, and inspiration. Sometimes, that is a responsibility easily fulfilled. Sometimes, I need to stand on the shoulders of giants and borrow from their words of wisdom. Here are some of my favorite quotes from people whom I admire and wish I knew, or had known. Funnily enough, compiling these made me realize they can be grouped into themes… themes of my life. On the importance of being yourself Your time it limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice.…

When asked about what I love about the beauty industry, I usually point out three main factors: that I get to work with and surrounded by women, that the industry is populated by smaller, personal businesses, and that the industry works to make the world a better place by making people feel better about themselves. Now, I have some data to back up my claims, from the GCI May 2010 issue (yes, I was catching up on my reading Saturday on my way to our Geneva offices, where I am writing from): At the general session of the Personal Care Products Council's 2010 Annual Meeting, PicewaterhouseCoopers presented highlights from its study on the economic and social impact of the personal care products industry. Here are some of the key highlights: - Industry employment diversity is strong. Women comprise 66% of the industry workforce, compared to 48% of the workforce for all industries.…

I love the summer for its sunshine, calm, and more quiet schedule. But I can't wait for the fall, among other reasons because we have so many fun events planned. When I was growing up in Geneva, there was a certain rythm to the week. One of the things I knew for sure, no matter what, was that Sunday night was family dinner night. Spaghetti with home-made tomato sauce, more specifically. My mother would cook the tomatoes on low heat all Sunday long, then peel them, add rosemary, salt, pepper, cook them some more, and then finally boil the water for the spaghetti. Any family member, immediate or less immediate, who was in Geneva on Sunday nights was invited, wordlessly, and would show up. That was our Sunday evening ritual. The sun rises every morning. And spaghetti is served at my Mom's house every Sunday night. Knowing that every Sunday night would be about family, friends, and spaghetti with tomato sauce gave me a sense of comfort, of control, of safety. To me, that is what a ritual…

If you were to ask those closest to me, they would tell you that over the past couple of weeks I have felt "discombobulated." This is one of my favorite words in the English language. To me, it means a combination of overwhelmed, in need of inspiration, looking for meaning. Nothing terrible, just confused, or rather, thrown into confusion. Today, I found the solution. Or at least two parts to the solution. Part 1: a beautiful orchid delivered to the Alchimie Forever showroom, ordered by my Mom, my Dad, and my three sisters. An orchid so white, gorgeous, and peaceful that arrived with a card saying: "Forever discombobulated. We love you. Your family." Part 2: a beautiful afternoon and evening with fellow spa and beauty industry friends. This afternoon, the Washington Spa Alliance held its second meeting at the National Press Club. The mission…

Today is August 1st, a special day for the Swiss around the world - it is Switzerland's National Day. To celebrate, I will have a (small) piece of my favorite Swiss chocolate, Frigor. Indeed, I am Swiss, and so are my skin care products Alchimie Forever. I am proud that we are 100% Swiss-made. So many beauty lines imply that they are Swiss - Swiss concept, Swiss formula, and more. You then read the fine print and the products are manufactured in China and the company has no distribution in Switzerland. At Alchimie Forever, we are Swiss, however you look at it: - Our products are 100% manufactured in Switzerland, as proven by the SwissCos logo on our boxes - Our products are formulated in Switzerland - Our products grew out of Forever Laser Institut, located in Geneva, Switzerland - I was born in Geneva, and still have…

I just returned from 4 days in Las Vegas. My feet hurt, and my head is spinning with new ideas. Indeed, I just returned from Cosmoprof/PBA. I have been going to Cosmoprof for the last few years. While I don’t exhibit, I find walking the floor stimulating and the breakout sessions fascinating. I also find that some of the most important meetings in terms of moving Alchimie Forever forward happen at Cosmoprof. And of course, my favorite thing ever, I get to see celebrities. Not Hollywood actresses, but beauty CEOs and personalities. During these past four days, I saw Tabatha Coffey, Antoinette Beenders, Essie Weingarten, Jane Iredale, and more. Love, love, love it! Most importantly during this show, two breakout sessions truly inspired me. More

Last night, in our Georgetown showroom, we hosted lovely group of people from the Harvard Club of DC – all alumni of my alma mater who live in the DC region. The goal: networking, enjoying delicious wine and treats, and to discuss summer beauty tips. Summer… = sun, heat, humidity, “smaller” clothes… So here goes: - Remember your body. Aging doesn’t stop at the jaw line – indeed, my father (before Norah Ephron in I feel bad about my neck) always told me to look at a woman’s neck and décolleté to determine her age. Our faces lie… our necks tell the truth! Extend that to arms, legs, and feet. Think of our More

I am back in Georgetown after two weeks abroad, but this morning, in spirit, I am still in Greece, remembering the magical moments spent on Tinos. When I was a little girl, my family and I used to go to Tinos often. My maternal grandfather, a Greek philosophy professor, decided to take a sabbatical there when my mother was 16, and moved the family to the island for two years, in a gorgeous, simple, very old stone house. The last time I was there, I was 14. Why I haven’t gone in so long, I don’t know. Returning to this magical, religious, non-touristy island to spend a week of vacation was heaven. I haven’t taken a week-long vacation in 5 years (mistake I won’t make again), and the Tinos lifestyle was ideal for a real break. There…

A few years ago, I came across the book The Georgetown Ladies’ Social Club, by C. David Heymann. I had just graduated from Georgetown McDonough School of Business, and it seemed like an interesting book given that I lived in DC (well, technically, in Arlington, VA). I started it, but could never get into it. Fast forward 6 years, to a month or so ago. I have since moved my home and my business to Georgetown, and have become fascinated with all things having to do with this neighborhood. I can’t start my day without reading The Georgetown Dish. Finding The Georgetowner in my mailbox makes me feel special. I guess you could call me a Georgetown groupie. More
